Greetings and salutations! This is your captain speaking.

In the following posts (the locals call them “toots”), I’ll give you a quick tour of the ships features. If you need more information or have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask.

You’ll notice a row of icons containing a house, a bell, three people, a globe and a magnifying glass. I’ll explain each of these in turn next.

The house is your “home timeline”. This is a list of the posts by the people you follow. If you’re just starting out, that’s probably only me, but that will change soon enough.

The bell is your notifications. If someone mentions your name, it will show up here.

The next icon looks like three people huddled together, that’s the “local timeline”. This is a list of all the posts from the people on our ship. Think of it as a neighborhood or clubhouse, and the only people there are the ones we’ve invited. Everyone talking here is a friend of mine and needs to be cool or I’ll make them walk the plank.

The globe icon is next, this is a list of posts from the fediverse. These are people from other ships or neighborhoods. They are probably cool, because they only show up here if someone from our ship follows them, but since the have a different captain I can’t promise anything. The good news is that if you run into any trouble here we can decide as a group to cut them off, either individually or their entire vessel.

Finally there is the magnifying glass. Here you can search for people, hashtags or any text to find posts that match. Here again you might see posts from outside of our ship so proceed with caution.

One more icon you’ll see is a menu (some people call it a hamburger menu, but I think that’s cheesy). Here you’ll find scads of settings and things you can customize. I won’t even try to explain these so take a look around and ask if you have any questions.

Speaking of asking questions, now it’s your turn to say something! At the bottom of each post there’s an arrow button you can use to reply, or you can write something new by tapping the blue circle with a pencil in it (if you don’t see this blue button, tap the “home” icon first.

You can type text, tap the paper clip icon to attach images. You can change the visibility of a post by tapping the globe icon, and add a content warning by tapping the CW icon (more on that later).
